As usual, we are taking a rest today so we can hit the next week completely rested and focused.
When I can afford the time, I like to sift through articles and magazines pertaining to fitness and health to keep myself as educated as possible. There is a lot of information out there and it is hard to know what is true and what is garbage. The CrossFit community is real helpful in finding the truth. The community is best accessed through the CrossFit Message Board. You can find answers to pretty much every question you have about getting healthy, maintaining health, diet, equipment, and injury.
We are reading a few books that we found to be highly recommended by the CrossFit community.
- Starting Strength: by Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore - this book talks about the foundational movements; the squat, deadlift, press, bench press, and power clean. Rippetoe is excellent in completely describing these movements. It is a must read for athletes and trainers.
- Enter The Zone: by Barry Sears - this book describes the Zone diet in detail, offers plenty of recipes, and is highly recommended by the CF community.
- Natural Hormonal Enhancement: by Rob Faigen - this book talks about naturally elevating hormone levels to increase fitness levels, increase fat-loss, and increase muscle-gain. Very good book!
All 3 of these books have excellent insight to getting and maintaining health. What I like most about them, is they don't talk about curing "sickness" or disease. They speak of super-health/fitness and how anyone can achieve it regardless of genetics. Lastly, the authors all agree that our society is overweight, weak, and extremely susceptable to fradulent marketeers of diets and fitness programs.
I believe that if you aren't living, you're dieing. The same goes for education: if you aren't learning, your getting dumber. Challenge yourself to educate yourself. If you want to live a long and healthly life, you must take responsibility for it. Ok, enough of me and my soapbox. Go read a book!
